It happens every spring … and brings us together | Opinion

The Grapefruit League is in full swing and the boys of summer are back at it as they go through their paces in small, intimate ballparks in places like Clearwater and Port St. Lucie in Florida. There are new faces trying to make Major League Baseball rosters, and veteran players getting back in shape for the season ahead. Given everything that’s been going on in the world, we just might need baseball more than ever.

Despite being an unabashed romantic, I know that when the 2023 season kicks off, MLB players won’t stride from some mythical corn field like the players in the movie “Field of Dreams.” Still, I will forever remember when James Earl Jones, who played the character of writer Terence Mann, proclaimed, “The one constant through all the years … has been baseball.”
