Microsoft wants to embed onto smart TVs


Microsoft wants your love of Xbox to go beyond the video game console.

Ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game showcase kicking off Saturday, Microsoft unveiled plans to bring Xbox to more screens, including working with TV makers to embed an Xbox experience to internet-connected devices.

“We believe that Microsoft can play a leading role in democratizing gaming and defining the future of interactive entertainment,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a statement.

Microsoft said it’s also working on streaming devices for cloud gaming to allow players to enjoy Xbox games without requiring a console.

Xbox Games Pass, the company’s Netflix-style subscription service, will also see an expansion. Microsoft said it will soon launch cloud gaming on browsers and is exploring new subscription options.

Xbox will host a joint showcase Sunday with studio Bethesda to highlight some of the video games launching this holiday and beyond. It’s the first since Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion.

Last holiday season, both Microsoft and Sony launched new video game consoles: the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, respectively. However, high demand and shortages in semiconductor chips have made the devices difficult to find. Last monthIn May, Sony reportedly warned analysts the PS5 would remain under tight supply constraints until 2022.
